Kick Boxing - What is it?

As a passive observer, kick boxing appears to be a fusion of karate and street fighting. It combines the elements of kicking, punching and boxing. They use elbows, knees, head blows, kicks and punches. Their kicks and punches are unlike Karate in that they incorporate the shin. And roundhouse kicks are very pervasive. They seldom us straight side kicks, which is quite numerous in TKD and Karate. Many of their powerful round house kicks utilize the surface of the shin. This is not a natural kicking surface, so it needs to be developed and trained. Some competitors have been known to literally break their shins in half due to a powerful leg shin on shin impact. Gruesome!

Kick boxing is most closely associated with Muay Thai Kick Boxing. Although American and western kick boxing have become a flavor of their own. Muay Thai Kick Boxing is basically the origin of kick boxing. American or Western kick boxing does not use shins as an offensive tool. Western kick boxing is basically a fusion of boxing and Tae Kwon Do.
